Carthage Elementary School fifth grade teacher Summer Thomas has been selected as the Outstanding Elementary School Mathematics Teacher for 2009 for Moore County by the North Carolina Council of Teacher of Mathematics (NCCTM).

She will receive statewide recognition at the 2009 NCCTM Conference in Greensboro, as well as receive a free membership to the organization created to further mathematics instruction.  Thomas said she is grateful for the recognition, adding, “Not only am I thankful for the recognition, I’m also proud to represent a district committed to growing each individual child to greatness.”

In addition to this honor, Thomas was named the 2008-2009 Teacher of the Year for Carthage Elementary School and is well-respected by students, colleagues, and parents for her leadership in the classroom, knowledge of the curriculum, and ability to effectively meet the needs of her students. She serves on the School Improvement Team, has recently earned a Master’s Degree in Administration, and is currently working on her National Board Certification.

“Ms. Thomas is definitely a leader at our school and has created a positive learning environment in her classroom where all students excel,” said Principal Rose Cooper. “She is knowledgeable, compassionate, and dedicated to her students. We are extremely proud of her accomplishments and know that she is deserving of this recognition.”
