Families at Play in the Sandhills

Although golf seems to be the main attraction here, Moore County has plenty to offer families in the way of recreation aside from hitting the links. If you’re looking for something to do outdoors with the kids, you don’t have to look far.

Parks

Looking for a great place to have a picnic or enjoy the native wildlife and plants? Why not try Weymouth Woods Nature Preserve in Southern Pines or the Arboretum in Pinehurst? For a larger affair, have a cookout at Aberdeen Lake Park under the picnic shelter while the children enjoy the new train playground equipment and skipping rocks on the lake.

Trails

The Greenway Trail Systems of Southern Pines and Pinehurst offer more than 15 miles of nature trails—ideal for hiking, biking and nature walks. Reservoir Park in Southern Pines is a great place to hike or paddle for awhile. Then have a picnic with the ducks.

Playgrounds

Moore County certainly has some great playgrounds. Be sure not to miss Camelot Playground in Pinehurst’s Cannon Park. Hillcrest Park in Carthage and “the sandy playground” at the Downtown Park in Southern Pines are also great places to let the kids get their wiggles out while you meet up with old friends and make new ones.

Sports

Organized sports are an important part of life in the Sandhills. And with organized sports come sports complexes. For inline skating, head to Rassie Wicker Park in Pinehurst. To practice batting, head to Hillcrest Park, and while you are there, enjoy the playground and walking trails.

These are just a few places and activities to discover when your kids are clamoring to get outside and play. Keep reading for even more ideas.
