We provide one-on-one at-risk youth mentoring both in school and in the community through our Moore Buddies Mentoring programs. Our Community Mentoring Program is dedicated to the youth in Moore County who are at risk of not reaching their full potential due to a variety of factors. Youth who are in need of a positive adult role model, close monitoring of school, home, and community behavior, as well as opportunities to learn social, recreational, vocational, and educational skills, can benefit from our program. The Community Mentoring Program matches adult volunteers who are willing to give their time, energy, and compassion to a Moore County youth for at least one year. Goals for the program include building self-esteem and confidence, goal setting, and encouraging students to be academically successful. Our In-School Mentoring Program is currently being offered to students at Southern Middle School and Southern Primary in Aberdeen, North Carolina. We have also expanded to Crain’s Creek Middle School and West Pine Middle. This program has greatly impacted the individual students and the school as a whole. Students who are involved in this mentoring program explore careers, get academic assistance, complete community service projects, take educational field trips, attend summer camps, and participate in community events.

To become a mentor or make a referral, please call our office at 910-692-5954 for more information.

We also provide Motheread/Fatheread® classes to parents/caregivers of children 0-5 years of age. These classes work to improve literacy in the lives of children and adults. Motheread/Fatheread® is a national program led by trained certified facilitators who educate parents on the importance and vital impact of reading to their children every day before birth and throughout early childhood. It helps parents to connect to children’s literature by using it as a framework to explore, discuss, and reflect on real-life, everyday experiences. The classes build parents’ confidence in the art of reading actively with their children, by practicing research-based strategies that help to engage children and make stories more meaningful. It also improves parents’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through reflective responses to adult writings. Our Motheread/Fatheread® are open to all English and Spanish-speaking families in our community.

Other Moore County Literacy Programs are offered to our adults seeking to learn English as a Second Language, Adult Basic Education Tutoring, Citizenship Test Preparation, and Digital Literacy Classes for all skill levels.

Contact our office at 910-692-5954 to learn more about hosting or joining a Motheread/Fatheread® class or to participate in one of our adult literacy programs.
