Golf- mini and regular lessons for kids - 2007/09/18 17:17 Forums are a great idea, thanks! Anyone know the nearest mini golf around here? My almost 5 year old loves to play, but I can't find any place around here, in the land of big golf. Also, he keeps asking about when he can play big golf, and I don't know when kids start as I didn't learn to play until my 20s. Anybody know how to get him started, lessons at what age, etc? Not trying to train the next Tiger or anything, he just keeps asking me so I thought I would find out. Thanks! Julia

Re:Golf- mini and regular lessons for kids - 2007/10/09 14:09 Julia, I can highly recommend Dale Briggs to teach your son. 5 might be a little young but if he is very interested, Dale is the teacher to get. He teaches at Knollwood on Midland road in Southern Pines.

As for mini-golf, there is a place called Mini-Pines that is off Rt 1 and Midland Rd in Southern Pines (692-4332). They also have a go-cart track but I think you have to be 10 for that. They are not open year-round so call before you go.

Good Luck!

Re:Golf- mini and regular lessons for kids - 2007/10/11 22:02 I'm not a golfer but First Tee might be the place to start as far as trying to find out what is available for lessons.

Here's their link - http://www.thefirstteesandhills.org/Club/Scripts/Home/home.asp

Re:Golf- mini and regular lessons for kids - 2007/11/29 17:38 Wanted to say thanks for pointing us to Dale Briggs, he has been giving my son lessons at Knollwood now for about a month and a half and it has gone great. Dale will start teaching them at 4 or 5 yo if they are interested, especially if they have an attention span long enough for it. My son has done better than I thought, and the price wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be either, $90 for 4 private 1/2 hour lessons. We looked into First Tee too, but it doesn't start until kids are 6 or 7 yo.
Also played a round at Mini Pines, now there is a mini golf course in need of work, the kids enjoyed it but the holes are pretty difficult and the two guys working the day we were there were a little scary, was glad my husband came too! Also not cheap, which considering the condition it is in was surprising. Pretty crazy in this golf area nobody has put in a good mini golf course, I have seen them that are designed for golfers to work on their "short game", natural grass and all, bet that would be pretty popular around here.
Anyway, just wanted to say thanks and share what I had learned about kids and golf in the area! Julia
