We will be moving there in a few months! - 2007/10/05 10:41 Hi everybody!
My name is Chris and I currently live in NH. My husband and I are planning to move to the Sandhills area with our two sons, ages 5 and 2. We were just down for a visit and like the area - especially the more rural areas. We will probably be there around June or July of '08.

We are moving because it is getting really expensive to live up here. We have a small ranch in the sticks on 0.75 acre and we pay almost $5000 a year in property taxes. (We do not have income tax or sales tax however.) We also are not fans of the cold winters. (We both used to live in FL and PA.) Another reason is that my husband has been diagnosed with arthritis in his spine, and he can no longer do his job as an ironworker foreman in Boston.

So, we are really excited about our move. We are hoping to start a business when we get down there. My sons and I have celiac sprue, which is a non-contagious autoimmune disorder that affects the intestines. Basically, we can't eat gluten which is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye and sometimes oats. As long as we avoid gluten, we are as healthy as any other person. When we visited down there, we had a really hard time finding food that we could eat. (The boys are dairy free too.) My husband is also avoiding gluten as of a month ago, and has taken up gluten-free baking. We decided that we would like to open a bakery/cafe/store for people with food allergies and intolerances. I'd love to know your opinions on this. (I currently own a food business, which I'll be selling soon.) I think that with all of the tourists visiting Pinehurst, it would be successful. I would also start a support group for people in the area, since it seems to closest are in Raleigh and Charlotte.

A couple of things do concern me a bit. We are "northerners" and we don't attend church. Will we be accepted?

That's about it. Thank you for taking the time to read my post! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the new site design!

Re:We will be moving there in a few months! - 2007/10/09 14:03 Hi Chris,

My name is Heidi and I am a northerner, too. I grew up in Westchester County, NY and moved here about 6 years ago. There are a LOT of northerners in this area so don't worry about being accepted. And attending church is not a requirement to be accepted.

As for a bakery/cafe/store for people with food allergies/intolerances - I would suggest you do some more research and talk to some of the locals. We have a wonderful health food store here called Nature's Own. They might be interested in selling your products. They also have a restaurant called 195 that is awesome. My feeling is that it would not work if you had such a narrow focus. but that is just my opinion.

Re:We will be moving there in a few months! - 2007/10/10 14:30 Thanks Heidi!

We tried like heck to find Nature's Own when we visited, and we couldn't find it. We were told it was off of Rte. 1 and we drove back and forth like idiots quite a few times.

Yeah, it seems like a narrow focus, but it's amazing how many people have celiac, gluten intolerance or food allergies. (The top doctor for celiac estimates that 1 out of 3 Americans are gluten intolerant.) I currently drive over an hour to Boston to stock up on GF baked goods for my family. We would probably also sell outside of the area via a web site and ship our goodies out as well. I also plan to get to know the doctors in the area so that they can refer their patients, as well as the hotel chefs so they have a place to purchase food for their allergic guests. I also want to start a support group and offer cooking classes for the newly diagnosed. Also, many retirees are diagnosed with celiac, and Pinehurst seems to have a large population of retirees. (Autistic kids also tend to have gluten and dairy allergies.) Also, we would not only sell gluten free baked goods, but things that are dairy free, egg free, peanut free, etc. Our baked goods are better tasting than many regular bakeries make - so I'm hoping that we might even get some regular non-allergic people.

Anyway, thank you for your input. I super appreciate it!! Maybe when I move there, you can help me find that Nature's Own store.

Re:We will be moving there in a few months! - 2007/10/10 15:23 Yes, Nature's Own is hard to find. It's not actually on rt 1. It's on what is known around here as Rt 1 Extension. It connects Rt 1 and Broad Street in Southern Pines. I would be happy to show you where it is when you get here!

It sounds like you have done your research and know what you want to do. I do know many kids with allergies (my son was allergic to eggs and peanuts until he turned 5). Honestly, there are no good bakeries around here of any kind as far as I am concerned. But maybe that is because I'm used to NY bakeries

Re:We will be moving there in a few months! - 2007/10/12 19:28 It's great to hear that you've officially made the decision to head South. I would love to see a bakery/deli that was a little more health conscious and certainly budget as well as kid friendly. Although we don't have any food allergies, I have been slowly cleaning out the cupboards and trying to make better choices for my family. Not an easy task when my little one is a candy junkie!

As far as the church thing, I don't think it's a big deal. We are not the most faithful church goers and I've never felt put out by anyone who was. I really think the area and the people who live here are really tolerant of other ideas and lifestyles. I guess that's what I love about the area, it's got a little bit of everything!

Let me know as you get closer to making the big move and how I can help.

Take Care,
Rollie
