Need Help and Resources - 2008/05/10 09:58 Good Morning All, I am new to the area and my 10 year old son seems to be struggling greatly with school. He has been tested several times for a learning problem, but all came up negative. He has great potential and does wonderful when he actually applies himself. At this point, I am desperate for more help with teaching him. I need a dedicated tutor for my son. He really needs help with everything, mostly reading and writing. His math is fine, he has never had a problem with numbers. Please someone assist and provide more information and resources so that I may provide my son with a better future.
Desperate in Aberdeen,
Miranda

Re:Need Help and Resources - 2008/05/19 13:00 First, where does your child go to school? And what type of resources are you looking for? (Free services, Tutors, Homeschool resources, School Transfer, etc). It would be easier to answer your question if I knew what you were looking for. There are lots of resources in the area but not all of them are free.

Please feel free to post another message or email me personally throught the SandhillsKids Contact Us link at the top of each page. I would be more than happy to share what I know about the area and point you in the right direction for additional services.

Good Luck!

Re:Need Help and Resources - 2008/05/25 21:23 I haven't had to use a tutor but have heard good things about Sylvan (in the shopping center by Sears). There testing is very thorough and they do a great job of identifying a children's strengths as well as weaknesses. The also evaluate the child's learning style which is extremely helpful when trying to determine the type of tutoring help they need. Since every child learns different, it is good know whether they are a visual or tactile learner.

I know someone who just had the testing done on her child (a teenager) and it answered a lot of questions about why he was having problems in certain subjects vs other ones. Plus, they were able to come up with a plan to not only tutor their son so he could catch up but give him the necessary skills need to accommodate his learning style as he grows. The only drawback to this is the cost. It can get really pricey really fast. However, you can always do the testing just to get a third parties fresh look at your child's learning issues. Sometimes a different point of view is all that is necessary.

My other suggestion would be to talk to the school principal. She may know of a teacher that tutors on the side or other resources that are available within the school system. You could also talk to the school's reading resource teacher to see if she has any recommendations. You might be able to get one of the resource teachers to tutor on side depending on the subject.

I hope that gives you at least a few places to start.
