How much homework is too much? - 2007/10/10 09:53 I just read a very interesting article that was in the PTA Parent e-mail that I get every so often. Two points really stood out to me: The recommended amount of homework is 10 minutes per grade. So my second grader should be getting 20 minutes of homework. That seems like the right amount to me and that is what he usually has. BUT from what I hear from parents of kids in 5th, 6th, 7th grade, the 10 minutes of homework per grade level is way off. 5th and 6th graders have 3-4 hours of homework where they should be getting 50 - 60 minutes. Now the kids that I know are in the gifted programs which is not discusses in this artcle. 3-4 hours still seems like way to much to me.

The other interesting point was that there are no studies that show homework to be helpful in the grades before high school. I may have to get Alfie Kohn's book.

Re:How much homework is too much? - 2007/10/10 14:33 My sons are only 5 and 2, but I agree that 3-4 hours seems excessive.

Re:How much homework is too much? - 2007/10/11 21:07 Hallie's only in 1st grade so I'm not dealing with the challenges of middle/high school homework but we spend about 30 minutes a night going extra class work. She usually has a reading/writing worksheet and a math worksheet plus her reading/AR book. So by the time we do it all, it's takes about half an hour.

I'm still trying to figure out how to balance homework, soccer, gymnastics and scouts! Hopefully, I will get the hang of it before Libby enters kindergarten next year!
