Moore County Public SchoolsThe Moore County School System has 22 schools servicing over 12,000 students. There are 14 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, 3 high schools and one vocational school. The county offers a wide variety of services both special needs and gifted students. Traditional Year ProgramTwenty-one schools within Moore County operate on a traditional school calendar year. In the traditional year program, students begin classes in late August and end their year the first week of June. Along with days off for conferences, teacher work days and national holidays, longer breaks are also provided for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Spring Vacation. Year Round ProgramThere are three schools within the County that offer an alternative schedule. Southern Pines Primary and Southern Pines Elementary - offer both traditional nine-month and year-round schedules while Academy Heights Elementary offers only a year-round program. The year-round schedule begins in mid July and ends at the same time as the traditional students in June. The school year is divided into 9-week quarters with a 3-week break between each quarter and a 5 week break for summer. Students attend the same number of days as their counterparts in traditional schools. The basic instructional program is the same at year-round and traditional schools. The year-round schedule is coordinated with the traditional schedule so that they share holidays and the school year ends at the same time to allow summer school attendance for those who wish to participate.
