Teaching Moore People To ReadMoore Literacy CouncilJoin us in our vision of eradicating illiteracy in Moore County by becoming a volunteer tutor for an adult student. According to national research, 22% of the adults in Moore County are “functionally illiterate.” Their vocational opportunities are limited, as is their ability to assist their children with homework. Some speak English. Most are learning English. Moore County Literacy Council and Sandhills Community College are the sole providers of public basic adult education in our county. Our role is to work with the people who cannot commit to classroom learning, either because of education level or scheduling challenges. All students are assessed for their education level and personal goals. All tutors receive twelve hours of training and ongoing support. Once a student and tutor are matched, they are given the teaching materials appropriate to the level of the student. They meet once a week, for 60 to 90 minutes, in one of many different public sites throughout the county. We ask both students and tutors to commit to a year, making allowances for vacation, holidays and travel. Other volunteer opportunities are available in the areas of office work, public relations, housekeeping, and fundraising.
