Local Writer, Nancy Howe, Visits O’Neal

Southern Pines – The O’Neal School was privileged to have Nancy Howe as a special guest at its Silver Falcon luncheon on Thursday, March 24th. Given twice a year, O’Neal treats grandparents and “special persons” of its students to two “Silver Falcon” luncheons a year. At these luncheons, students often entertain with a musical or drama performance or talk to attendees about special projects or programs at the School. This spring, in honor of O’Neal’s 40th birthday, Nancy Howe, one of O’Neal’s founding parents and now current grandparent, talked about her book, “Dear Owie” – a collection of letters she wrote to her parents and sister, “Owie” from the time she married in 1959 until the death of her father in 1983. “Dear Owie” provides insight to the times and eras in which they were written. Consequently, the history of O’Neal is intertwined throughout its pages. Many of O’Neal’s founding parents and staff were also in attendance.

Nancy Howe graduated from high school in Buffalo, New York and for two years studied at Wells College in Aurora, New York before marrying in 1959 and joining her new husband, Tom on a dairy farm in rural North Carolina. Today, this mother of two and grandmother of five is the co-owner of a family nursery and landscaping business in the Sandhills area.

The O’Neal School is a college preparatory, independent day school serving students from Pre-Kindergarten age 3 thru 12th grade. It is dedicated to the development of academic excellence, strength of character, and physical well-being of its students in an environment where self-discipline, integrity, and consideration for others are fundamental. The O’Neal School is now accepting enrollment applications for the 2011-2012 school year. Contact Alice Droppers, director of admissions at (910) 692-6920 ext. 103. for more information or  go to www.ONealSchool.org <http://www.onealschool.org/>
